Don’t Put it Past Him

I’ve wanted to share about this for some time but never think about it when I can.  This is how I learned to never put anything past God.  In other words, don’t ever say that He won’t do something.  In early 1989, when I was in prison so not long since I’d rededicated my life to the Lord -  I was sitting and talking with a friend and told her that I knew that He’d never use me to speak in front of people because I wasn’t a public speaker.  Right?  I know it wasn’t 2 months!

I still remember that Tuesday night Bible study that some ladies put on from the outside.  It was one of my favorites and I attended for months.  We’d sing a bunch of more familiar hymns then one of the ladies would give a lesson yet never was anyone from the inside asked to speak until I said that God wouldn’t have me do it.  I was asked to give my testimony with only a few days to prepare.  I wanted this to be totally Him anyway so it did not require much.  On the night of my speaking I went into the little half bath that was adjacent to our Bible study room and got on my knees.  I asked Him to speak through me. I remember feeling very nervous and like I rattled on but it was well received.  After the meeting we went back to our rooms to be counted.  I rarely came out of my room after this but my bestie at the time asked me to come out.  We sat in the “day room” and shared.  As she read these scriptures, telling me that I had spoken on all of it as she listened at the Bible study that night, I bawled.  Isaiah is 61:1-3:

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3 To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

I was in awe.  I went on to being interviewed on the telephone on TV at a local to home Christian TV station.  I was on TV just a week after I was released.  At that time I gave several testimonies to youth groups and was on TV another couple of times.  If you check out the archives, I've also given my testimony twice at Celebrate Recovery in more recent years.  Only God knows what is next.

Recently I have been attending an online Bible Journaling conference called “Flourish: where faith and creativity meet”.  It consists of several online videos every other day.  On one of the days a lady spoke much about the sketching process and she walked us through a project of a faceless self-portrait (any woman) with words that we felt gave us an identity.  I was not even going to do it at first but as I thought about it, these scriptures came to mind.  So, I did a quick draw even though my hands are the worst right now at drawing and even signing my own name.  Typing works a bit better since I don’t have to bend my fingers much.  It’s easier to just share the finished product.

 I found that I also loved working with my new watercolors and contemplated doing more.  I have also still had the idea of doing more hand lettering going through my mind.  I believe God showed me that this newest self-portrait was wrong.  I was supposed to letter these entire 3 verses with a self-portrait.  And so I began.  I was also inspired to label the self-portrait.  I need to remember that lines are a good idea.  But not bad for a first attempt.

May God bless you through my writing. If He has especially touched you in any way, please leave a comment below. Your comments are so very encouraging to me to help me to keep writing. MERCY

I’m working on my first Bible Journaling since our return from Pennsylvania.  We went to visit our son (my step-son) and won’t go again until we are sure that winter is over.  Our trip started out cold but tolerable until when were were closer to leaving then things fell apart – nearly everything!  I got sick, my husband got sick, the weather turned to us being delayed in flying home due to us running from a major storm to get out of there.  Our son was in a car accident – not hurt yet car probably totaled.  We came home to a messy house, I was so exhausted, still feeling ill.  My hubby having to have a tooth pulled on top of still fighting the pink eye.  I was in a lousy mood, not wanting to talk to anyone.

My brother called, read me scripture and prayed for me (one of the very nicest things of growing up with a big brother who’s a minister (now retired)).

With all the mess in our home I could not even seem to wrap any part of my head around Bible Journaling even though I knew it would help me to feel better!  I actually just started leafing through my Journaling Bible looking for inspiration.

And my eyes were diverted to

*Hebrews 13:5b “…I will never fail you, I will never abandon you.”

And I was reminded of that period back in 2013 that I always wanted to share about.  I had vertigo.  I don’t know how many of you have had it but if you have, you know what I’m talking about when I share that it is one of the most awful symptoms there is.  It is also very similar to the “Brain Nausea” that I had when on the Decadron for the brain lesions that I incurred from the CNS Vasculitis.  I was so mad at God for letting this happen again that I said all kinds of things to Him that I would have never said in my right mind.  After this I felt foolish for saying such things, begging His forgiveness.  And yet all the while I was mad and spewing I kept hearing “And, I still love you.”… “And, I’m still here.”…and I won’t leave you.”  This is where I truly learned this, deep within my heart and it changed me somewhat.  I learned of His deep love for me like never before.

He was reminding me of this now.  And my heart softened at His MERCY!

Sharing His Guidance

Recently I’ve been doing a Bible Hymnal Journaling Challenge.  I was asked to share how He spoke to me while doing it since I did it differently than others.  I believe it may be of interest to some of you so I’m sharing the same here:

I approached this new hymnal mapping challenge the same way that I do with anything spiritual, leaving it in God’s hands and letting Him show me what to do with it.  I found out the first hymn we were going to use was “A Mighty Fortress is our God” and I instantaneously saw fort walls…the big grey brick walls.  I saw them nearly 24X7 after that (in my mind’s eye).  But nothing else came until after the information was put out on Monday to start the 5 week study.  I read all about it and perusing my FB groups.  I went to another Bible Journaling group (Bible Journaling for Beginners Community) and was just glancing through all of the Journaling art as I do daily when I saw the scripture posted:  Proverbs 18:4: “Wise words are like deep waters; wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook.” And a time from 2013 came to mind when I kept having this song go through my mind and every so often I felt bubbles rising up within me. (I don’t know why I never investigated this further but I didn’t).  Then I thought of my new Inspire Proverbs coloring book that I had yet to do much in and didn’t know why…well, maybe this was it?  And to my surprise I saw Proverbs 18:10 “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.” Right within the same chapter along with the following illustrated journaling page on the same verse.  The rest is just what I saw in my mind’s eye as I spoke with Him and worked on it.  I kept seeing those fort walls and you will see how I incorporated them.  The envelope on the tip-in has the words to the song from 2013 “Everlasting God” as performed by Seventh Day Slumber along with all of the scriptures that we were given for this hymn, looked up and printed out.

Everlasting God lyrics
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord
Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our Strong Deliverer

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You won’t grow weary
Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our Strong Deliverer

You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint
You won’t grow weary
You’re the defender of the weak
You comfort those in need
You lift us up on wings like eagles

I had shared about my “His Strength” journal that I made from front to back.  Robin Mead has  instructions on her blog.  She is a Christian artist.  I have been collecting scriptures, stories, lyrics, quotes, etc… since I made it, on God’s Strength.  The words to the hymn and song will be put in this book, too.

By the time I did all of this I had also read all of the statistics regarding this hymn but could not remember them and God did not bring them to mind so I just figured this was it.

I believe all of this came together like this for God’s reminder to me that He not only gives us His Strength but He also provides His Protection, too.
