He is making perfect sense out of a perfectly senseless, messed up life!

A long time coming testimony - Given for Celebrate Recovery 1/14/2016

There will not be a whole lot of comments from me with this due to me just being in shock and awe at the reaction that I was given when I (feeling like a major klutz) gave this at http://mybayside.church/meet-pastor-david-murphy/ where the Celebrate Recovery is held that I attend. I will add some additional comments and links at the end of this.  At some time this is supposed to be put on the internet.  I will add the link if I ever do find it.

Dear Heavenly Papa,

We come here tonight to meet with You, all in one accord. I pray that the testimony that I am about to share speaks to our mutual love for one another and of the grace that you have shown us. Father, open all of our hearts to understand the love that you have for us. Love on us all Lord to the point that we will never, ever want to turn back! Bring us all to a closer, more sustainable knowledge of You! Until the day that You take us to our home, our true home to live with You forever and ever! In Jesus’ most powerful name, Amen

I am Juliana, a grateful believer in Jesus Christ. At this time I have victory over drugs, cigarettes, depression, co-dependency and on down through the layers. I entered into this past 27+ years having had victory over alcohol and drugs with even more chains to follow. God has let me “Be still, and know that He is God!” several times over. Some may see most of my past years as negative but I’ve come to see the ones after I finally let Him have me as gifts that brought about tremendous changes, helping many of those chains to just fall off.

Although sober for 27+ years now I did not find Celebrate Recovery until 2013 which did much more than just accelerate my growth. I found a group of believers searching themselves and seeking to know God more right along with me. I began listening to each and every member along with boxes of family photos that has helped to spark many long, lost memories and I am truly grateful for all of them.

2015 was my first year depression-free (Hallelujah!) since I was a young child. So you all probably know that when I again share that I’ve had a history of a 16 month prison stint, 4 car totals, 5 suicide attempts, years of many abuses along with seeing much more than any one person should ever have to see within dysfunctional friends, family, and loved ones around me, I’m supposing that you can pretty much fill in most of the blanks yourselves!

No father was listed on my original birth certificate. I was adopted at 18 days old into a family with 2 brothers who were 11 and 15 years older than me. We lived in Ohio. I was raised in the church. My parents were involved in the healing ministry back in the early 60’s. I now have come to believe that Satan attacked my whole family in the later 60’s with my oldest brother having a nervous breakdown in 1969 and my dad starting to drink in 1970 when I was 10- and that is where my story begins.

Did no one want to be my dad? I recently came to realize that in my childish psyche I thought I would gain my dad’s acceptance by drinking also, so I started drinking when I was 10. It wasn’t long after that the “party” started; marijuana by 11, cigarettes by 14, LSD by 15 and many other drugs, many numerous kinds of abuse, and the rest, etc… Yet in the midst of all of this I was still made to go to church every Sunday and ended up being saved at 13.

Then in 1988 I was arrested for selling LSD. This, after being saved for 15 years but running around not knowing where to go, I finally fell! My “partner in crime’s” mother read the Bible to me over the phone one morning when I was so distraught that I could not continue and it was just a few days before I was watching church on a Sunday morning and I felt His presence in my entire apartment. (I admitted that I was powerless and that my life had become unmanageable – (Step 1) – I was powerless) I let Him have me that day. In less than 6 months I was sentenced to 16 months in prison. By this time it no longer felt like a harsh treatment but an escape from 18 long years of feeling as if I lived most of my days in hell. I finally yearned to know more about Jesus and I knew that I had plenty of time to do it. (I knew that a higher power (only Jesus) could restore me to sanity. (Step 2.) I started with reading the New Testament as I adjusted to prison life and then wondered what I still had ahead of me. As I sat on my tiny bed one of those first days, I heard in a loud “audible” voice “You are a blessing to Me, My child.” I had no doubt that it was God. I cried! I cried for a couple of days. I was a blessing to Him? I felt like Scum and yet I was a blessing to Him? The first major thing that I learned after entering prison was that God was my Father; my TRUE Father.

And He made a truly heart-felt covenant of His peace with me:

*John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

This became my favorite verse to this day because I had not known peace until I found Him.

And, He showed me that my dad was just a man and only Jesus is perfect. Through those 16 months of near weekly visitations, God healed my relationship with my Dad. (amends? Step 9). We went from being near enemies for 18 long years to being like “AA buddies”. I don’t remember more than 1 tiny argument between then and 2001 when my “Daddy” went home to be with the Lord.

I went on to learning so many things that I would be thankful for many times over. Through these many experiences and my own fear of being alone, the Holy Spirit became my closest companion and still is to this day. After my surrender to Him, He started peeling off the layers. Before I ever went to AA, OA, or even Celebrate Recovery I was being led through the steps. I shared with my partner in crime by letter. We confessed so many things to one another, praying for each other and sharing in all that God taught us. (more amends. Step 9 (Curiously today he is a Celebrate Recovery leader in New Mexico)

*James 5:16a “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other
so that you may be healed.”

I was married in 1990 and we celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary in 2015. I spent almost the whole of the 90’s working in a hospital, we got custody of my step-son in 1999 when he was 13, and I was looking to go back to school to become a Paramedic when I became ill.

I spent 2001-2003 in bed with a rare illness that started with a stroke at just 40 years old. I had 7 type-written pages of symptoms and side effects from the illness and numerous medications. I relearned how to brush my teeth and I had an IQ similarly to that of Forrest Gump. Yet I learned to know Him. He didn’t let me die, He let me live. He kept me alive through what was known to be a terminal disease at that time and still is. I changed once again. It so seems as though I have been washed and renewed several times over. I let Him use me! I became His clay to mold. Still fully infatuated by my God who called me His blessing.

Now, with such an extensive history I have prayed numerous times about the best way to share all of this yet the words never came. Of course, I haven’t wanted this to be all about me, but more about His ALL SUFFICIENT GRACE. August of 2015, was the first time that I mentioned about wanting to give my testimony here and through a worship song Good, Good Father it all started coming to me. (Step 12 having had a spiritual awakening- carrying the message to others).

This next writing turned out to be a bit different. Through all of His sculpting I turned out to be an artist and published author (please see the things that I brought to share). I do my art and writing by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, so one night recently, when I had no clue how to get my writing time in for this testimony since it was already after midnight, I prayed for the Holy Spirit to wake me up with His words if I was to write. And so, there I sat at my computer at 2am when these words came to mind:

We hear that alcoholism is a disease but what about the rest of it? All the rest that Celebrate Recovery involves are the same, “diseases”, diseases of the heart! Could we ever think that we are fully cured? Not until we are in Heaven with Him! Yet He makes us able to withstand this world and all its mess through which we must rise to be givers instead of takers, lovers instead of haters, fighters on our knees not with our fists. New creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”):

Good Bye Old Self - 2 Corinthians 5:17

We depart in peace
Knowing God is with us
Feeling His Presence
Every step of the way
Knowing that it is
By His grace
We are free
…..written by me from prison in 1989.

By His grace we are free! By His goodness we have been won to repentance! Not by condemnation as so many have seemed to think.

Romans 2:4 “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

I was so buried within the lies of Satan who dragged me through the mud that I thought I was worthless and people, even those claiming to love me, pushed me down even further. Yet through a man named Rick Warren, God shed His mercy upon us, the sinners that He came to save through His Son, Jesus Christ. So that we may not end up locked away, wallowing in our own dung. Jesus is here to become our King.

Only by learning to seek Him in the midst of my pain have I learned that His grace is what I cling to. I seek Him to remain alive. His miracles have abound. I have had much healing. And I have become thankful in the midst.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 “in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

I have seen numerous hardships through infirmities, yet I came through them more like a shiny new penny, the TRUE me within my heart. Rising above them all, only by Him! He has been my hiding place. And as I see so many others who have denied Him that still yearn for happiness, I have found joy in surrendering my heart to Him.

In these 12 years since I got out of bed I’ve learned to find myself more than ever before. Through my own devices I, once again, was running ahead of God, then stopped in my tracks to learn to “Be still and know”. I spent numerous hours, days, and weeks alone with Him, learning to know more of who He is. And once again I was found.

Since 2015 I have come out from the shadows of healing and learning, once again. I have had numerous healings in this past 15 years; Too many to count. Even though I did not come out unscathed and have some notable deficits. My pastor gave a sermon one very recent Sunday.

2 Corinthians 12:9 “And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Later that day I wrote to my pastor and told him:  “Great sermon today!  My life!  I woke up hurting and grumbling this morning but I was worshipping and praying on the way to church as I just persevered and believed!  I felt like I could fly when I got there!”

The ONLY comments I seem to stay firm on are:

And, another worship song inspired by last night:

I’VE JUST GOTTA LET YA’ ALL KNOW – ‘CAUSE IT’S ALL MY GOD!!!!

Just taking a break from cleaning while a room is occupied for a few that I need to clean next and as I start looking around on my computer it came to mind that I have yet to share what’s up with me. Well only slightly with a few people.

The Fall of 2014 after the move was rough. Actually from mid-October of 2013 through the whole of 2014 for the most part was the roughest in our 25 year marriage. We believed that Satan was on the rampage. He knew that I was coming into this time and he didn’t like it. BUT

*1 John 4:4 “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

And, I am on my way back.

I could go on and on telling you about all of the many struggles but as my bestie says, “you couldn’t make it up!” and as our leader at Celebrate Recovery reiterated to me once again last night, “It’s much better to concentrate on the victories than on the struggles!” I started to find a scripture befitting of not doubting but they are so numerous and so to pick just one might be a tough one. And too numerous, once again, regarding God’s faithfulness yet this song has kept playing through my mind by Lincoln Brewster:

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

[Verse:]
Great is Thy faithfulness
O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not
Thy compassions they fail not
As Those hast been Thou forever will be

[Chorus:]
Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness Lord unto me

(Verse2)
Pardon for sin
And a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence
To cheer and to guide
Strength for today
And bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine
With ten thousand beside

Since the beginning of 2015 my husband and I have had numerous prayers answered and life seems to have done a flip flop. We had prayed about my husband’s job for several years since he had several pay cuts and seemed to have no room for advancement among other seemingly poor business practices by his employer. Yet we did know that he was blessed to have a job through the years of recession in the US. He kept working and we kept praying, knowing that God was making a way even when we saw no way. I applauded my husband for his faithfulness, working in a job that he was not happy about going to daily for 8+ years. Then his new job took 2 months with interviews, e-mails, phone calls, and on and on. When he got the job we were so overjoyed and we knew that God was showing him favor for his longsuffering. The job he ended up with was more than we even dreamed of and he is quite happy there. This job has taken an adjustment to 3rd shift hours but we have known it was from God so He would help us with that adjustment.

Along with the new job there is newness in the financial management of our household as well. I had been prophesied over in the not too distant past and was told that I had a gift of giving and that God was answering my prayers in the exact words for Him to bless us so that we could bless others. We have been able to bless others, not only from our own household but also in being shown deals that can be shared with others in need!

AND, a big AND, my hubby announced at his birthday/new job celebration that he thought that we’d see about going on a cruise for our 25th wedding anniversary (12/8/15). A cruise was on my (not actually written down) bucket list! So excited and it is now booked so looking forward to an entire week away with my honey, my precious gift from God who has lived a life of longsuffering coming alongside me, too, in all my illnesses and quirks (LOL)! Hallelujah!

And, with that it is time to go back to my cleaning and I will have to write a bit more later!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, here I am doing just what I figured would happen. I had a dream where I ran into the lady who helped to lead me back to the Lord in 1988 and we were giddy, then I awoke just wide awake knowing I needed to get up and write! Hallelujah! As I walk with the Lord longer I’ve started to see a pattern now and then. ALL THE TIME, He is God and I cannot second guess Him because He will prove it to me yet I DO KNOW HIS LOVE FOR ME and like I might guess my Heavenly Father was up to something loving, kind, and daddy-ful (just made that up) I sometimes see my Heavenly Papa’s hand in the midst all too lovingly! I have felt that things were falling together as in puzzle pieces at times. He is here…He is with me…He is:

* Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

*1 Corinthians 2:11 “For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.”

I’m always in awe! He never ceases to amaze me!

And my writing feels like dictation this morning, which doesn’t always happen but it’s quite cool when HE CHOOSES to do it! That’s just it IT’S ALL GOD! His revelations are edifying to me which is most probably why He shows me His amazing work so notably! He lets me know that He is walking with me and talking with me!

Kind of old and corny? Well, that’s because I learned it when I was a little girl and when I went to prison in 1988 it rang through my head and heart almost daily for that entire 16 months. He helped keep me alive and sane in that scary place with that song, those words. (Palm Sunday our church started the service with it. We heard it on the outside speakers as we were walking in and I entered in tears and remained that way until the greeting. The memories of Him truly becoming that ALIVE to me all those years ago were just overwhelming! (And still are overwhelming this morning as I’m moved to tears again!)) He truly is a companion, the best companion. I hope to convey that to you who are reading my blog at this time! I pray you never neglect to seek Him out because as the Bible says:

*Proverbs 8:17 “I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me.”

"My Momma's Home" w/added digital art - by Juliana

Back to the share at hand. Things are falling together, it seems, like the gathering together of so many thoughts and prayers over these 26 (nearly 27) years since I started walking with Him again. I see it almost daily! And even since I started writing this blog post, I’ve had the realization of another miracle in my life. I have had another healing that to me one of the most amazing of those entire 26 years. In my past life of degradation before I ‘woke up’, I fell off a roof and broke my back. I crushed my L2 Vertebra. I could go into a long sorted ordeal of all that has transpired since yet I am mostly alive to share of His glorious works and not to go into all the gory details of my past. The memories are good for testimony’s sake and as a reminder of what He has brought me through but when the sting is still there (which it is not) then healing is needed! This whole fall ended up in a 10 hour spine surgery in 1995 where I truly learned of my assurance of my salvation and eternal life. It seemed that most people expected me to be fearful of dying since I was told that I had a 50/50 chance of survival but that wasn’t it at all. The only fearful thought I fought was in awaking paralyzed or similarly handicapped. I KNEW HEAVEN WAS IN MY GRASP if I did not make it through. Yet, I was left with back pain. I woke up, even daily, for 17 years feeling stiff and so many ramifications of pain…BUT WALKING!

(I sure wish I’d see these peacocks that I’m told by the sound that I am hearing – beautiful!)

In 2012, my husband was led to the “Wheat Belly” diet and we quit eating wheat and to my surprise within just a few months nearly all of the “chronic” pain had left me along with other various arthritic pain in my body. Hallelujah! I did prove this when I, out of true stupidity, fell off the wheat free wagon in 2014 when on vacation in my home town of 45 years. Sentimentality can seemingly be true stupidity at times. I “had to eat” certain things that I loved and by the time I’d thought that just a little over time wouldn’t hurt, I was on the couch several days a week in severe pain with the knowing that if I kept it up that I would be in that wheelchair far sooner than I’d had faith to walk out against! Within another few days, I was back off the wheat and even mostly fully gluten free. (If God so touches your heart, please check out the Wheat Belly diet at http://www.wheatbellyblog.com/ There have been many more positive resolutions from this diet than just the loss of pain.)

Yet in the last couple of years I’d started developing a case of pretty intense Sciatica so I sought the Lord and an orthopedic doctor that to the surprise of my chiropractor, even agreed with my returning to him for relief versus surgery so I had been seeing this doctor again for several months.

To make a long story short, I will share a timeline of last week:

Our refrigerator/freezer failed about a week ago with the subsequent 3 days of work standing on the ceramic tile to finally end up knowing that we had several more days before the mess would all get back to “normal”. By that time I was on the couch with my legs feeling like jelly. I had to stop! That day I prayed like never before about my back telling my Heavenly Papa how I just couldn’t stand it (remember David in Psalms?). Thursday night I went to bed with this strange feeling that I hadn’t had that back pain all day (?). On Friday night as my bestie and I walked down the hall at Celebrate Recovery I remarked to her that the pain had still not returned and I ended up sharing it in small group that night. The following day was when I started writing this and I had a little pain when fixing dinner but it left me with just knowing that it was time to stop and that has been the way this has been ever since. I have had less pain than possibly since the fall in 1980 when my back was broken. I am still in awe and knowing that if I do have pain that it is merely a warning sign to slow down.

When we moved to Christian Retreat, I kept having the word “restoration” go through my mind. I knew God was up to something. This place is amazing. The grounds are perfumed with His Holy Spirit. I drove into this place in 2005 with my brother and I knew from then on that the fullness of God was here. The only way I’ve known how to explain it is that prior to living here we were in a community where there were few of us home during the day due to most being away at their jobs and (so it was quiet and peaceful) but it felt empty, except His anointing upon our home. Since our move here, it never feels empty!  I never feel alone!  In my studio is the strongest sense of His holy presence!

And, I know even more than I’ve known all along that He is preparing me for more. This year, so far, I’m learning to walk in “One Day at a Time” like never before. I have an extra-spiritual faith that won’t quit, knowing that He is working in me. I’m experiencing More Healing, More Joy, More of His peace, More, More, More of Him! Come along for the ride…only He knows what He is doing:

*1 Corinthians 2:9 “But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

*1 Corinthians 1:27 “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;”

I AM ON MY WAY BACK!

Finding His Goodness

I continue to be woken up nearly every day with this song going through my mind:

Not Alone
Until We Have Faces
by Red

Slowly fading away
You’re lost and so afraid
Where is the hope in a world so cold
Looking for a distant light
Someone who can save a life
Living in fear that no one will hear your cry
Can you save me now

I am with you
I will carry you through it all
I won’t leave you, I will catch you
When you feel like letting go
‘Cause you’re not, you’re not alone

Your heart is full of broken dreams
Just a fading memory
And everything’s gone, but the pain carries on
Lost in the rain again
When will it ever end
The arms of relief seem so out of reach
But I, I am here

And I will be your hope
When you feel like it’s over
And I will pick you up
When your whole world shatters
And when you’re finally in my arms
You’ll look up and see, love has a face

And I will be your hope
(You’re not alone)
And I will pick you up
And I will be your hope
And I will be your hope

Slowly fading away
You’re lost and so afraid
Where is the hope in a world so cold

When I rededicated my life to the Lord in 1988, this was my main reason for grabbing a hold of Him. I was falling and He picked me up!

In July of 1988, I was 28 years old and I was working at a county agency for the elderly as the secretary - bookkeeper - activity director - and the director in the absence of the director. I was dating a model that was 7 years younger than me. I ran around in skirts, hose, and high heels and I looked as though I had it all to the world, but I was dying inside. I’d just been arrested for selling LSD and I knew that I was headed for prison. To me, this was the final blow. I’d had it! My heart broke wide open! I was going over the edge and had literally decided to have myself committed! And God reached down and picked me up!

I’ve heard, time after time, people preaching fire and brimstone. That may work for some, but it didn’t ever work for me. People condemned my ways and told me that I needed to repent, but all that did was give me more reason to hate myself and shoved me further and further down. That gave me all the reason in the world for my various suicide attempts. I thought I was no good and worth nothing! Every time I heard this preached on the radio, TV or etc… it heaped more shame, more guilt, more depression upon me.

But God came to me and pulled me up. He lifted me out of the muck and the mire and showed me His love. He wasn’t condemning, He was loving! And, I started to understand His love more through His word. I sat at my desk at work each day with tears running down my face but my Bible lay on my desk and I read His words:

Psalm 27:1,14
“The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?...

…Wait on the LORD;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the LORD!”

And I could go on!

Just a couple of months ago I found a Bible verse that struck me. I know I’ve read it time and again before. This is why His Bible is called the living word. I read it over and over again and sometimes it takes even years before I see a certain verse. He knows when my heart will be open to it and it’s like He highlights it when it will truly touch my heart. I’ve learned this so many times over in this almost 23 years of my daily walks with Him that I continue to ponder His word on a daily basis. This verse was very special and continues to have a special place in my heart:

Romans 2:4
“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

And, I started praying for others differently; for them to see His goodness. For others to find His love as I did. And, I realized my true passion is just that, to share His love with others so that they may find what He has shown me. That their aching hearts may be comforted by the love of our magnificent Father.

2 Corinthians 1:4
“who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

And, I continue to hear those words going through my mind as if He was saying them to me Himself “I am with you. I will carry you through it all. I won’t leave you, I will catch you when you feel like letting go. ‘Cause you’re not, you’re not alone.”

And that is also why when I saw this photo it became one of my very favorites. I have a little card with it on it hanging on my desk in front of me now. I say I am the female version in this painting by an unknown artist:
